What occurs during Psychotherapy?
This depends on the person, their goals, the severity of their problems, and the openness to change that each person brings to the process. As therapy progresses, the partnership with the psychologist brings about a working alliance that produces change that can last a lifetime. Of course, at first, talking about private, painful events can be difficult and sometimes overwhelming. But as you get used to the process, it gets easier and healing. Some therapists have in session measurements but mostly we do look at how you are functioning in your life. Are your interactions improving, are you able to make that painful decision you have been putting off, can you find the resources you need for your family or yourself that you hadn’t thought of before you were able to talk it out with a professional. Most sessions last an hour, depending on the type of treatment. EMDR sessions, depending on the provider and their training, may last longer. Much of the feedback that I receive is that, surprisingly, is talking about painful things makes you feel better and just talking to an objective outsider is helpful, relieves stress and anxiety. Long term therapy digs into patterns and historical context and helps bring about deeper knowledge, self-esteem changes, and acceptance of who you are and want to become.
